Food review: Fish & Chips Experience

It was barely sunrise and already the seagulls were circling. Not for chips (well, not just chips) – but for the latest arrivals at Jellycat’s wildly popular Fish & Chips London pop-up. And what a line-up. Three new characters, equal parts delightful and delicious, joined the fold this morning – and the queue was longer than a deep sea fishing line! 

Amuseables Sausage was first to cause a stir. This charismatic banger strutted into the spotlight with a look that said “I’m on first name terms with *all * the fish – thank you very much!” Sizzling with charm and confidence, it’s no surprise patrons later spotted him shimmying like a star next to the vinegar dispensers… 

Next, the elegant and ever-collected Michelle Mussel, arrived on a wave of glamour. She’s a deep-sea darling with a perfectly poised shell and a penchant for meditation. 

And then – out rolled Onnie Pickled Onion. Tangy. Tenacious. Small but mighty. She’s the kind of onion that leads a conga line and makes friends in minutes. One second she’s cracking jokes, the next she’s got the whole counter in tears (happy kind!). 

The turnout for the launch was nothing short of legendary, with devoted fans arriving before sunrise. Naturally, the first on the scene was Chip Seagull – early bird and self-proclaimed snack connoisseur (and, rumour has it, member of the mysterious SBI [Seagull Bureau of Investigation]). 

“I set my alarm for 3:17am… then I saw Sausage from twenty metres. Knew immediately – star quality,” Chip declared, flapping excitedly. “Mussel’s a marvel. And Onnie? She’s the zing this incredible pop-up deserved.” 

With characters this coveted, it’s no surprise the chip counter has never been busier. One bystander even fainted with joy. (Well, they sat down heavily, but it looked dramatic.)
